Karla Gachet was born in Quito, Ecuador. She moved to the United States to go to college and studied art and graphic design in the bay area in California. One good day, she discovered documentary photography.  Seduced by the power of storytelling with images, she decided to study photojournalism at San Jose State University. In 2004, she moved back to her homeland to explore it with fresh eyes. She began working freelance until one of the main newspapers in the country, Diario El Comercio, hired her in 2005.  She worked here for two years, and became the first woman to be a part of their photographer’s staff. After leaving the paper in 2007, she started working on more long-term projects. One of these consists of fourteen photo stories done on a road trip in collaboration with Ivan Kashinsky, her husband.  These stories explore the diverse culture of five countries in South America. On December of 2009, they published a book called “Historias Minimas, De Ecuador a la Tierra del Fuego” (Short stories: From Ecuador to the Land of Fire.) Karla’s stories from this trip, as well as the book, have won awards in prestigious contests such as: World Press Photo and POYi. This year she was recognized with the third place in POYi Latin America, in the category photographer of the year. Her work has been exhibited in Quito, Cuenca and London. Karla is currently represented by Panos Pictures.

She is currently based in Los Angeles, California.
